AbstractMicroplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants of concern in marine ecosystems, with potential risks to food safety and human health. This study assessed MP contamination in seven edible shellfish species collected from Malpe Harbor, Karnataka. A total of 141 individuals were analyzed using visual, stereomicroscopic, and FTIR techniques. Portunus pelagicus exhibited the highest MP load, followed by Perna viridis and Penaeus indicus. Fibres and fragments were the most prevalent types, with MPs predominantly ranging from 1000⿿3000 μm. Polymer analysis identified fishing and textile-related sources. The results raise concerns about MP exposure through seafood consumption and call for improved waste management and monitoring.
